The quick answer

Start with a tee, a suitable hitting area, and a plan for containing the ball. Add technology only when you know what question it will help you answer.

Plan the space before the purchase

Check the full bat-swing area, overhead clearance, ball path, and space behind the net. Follow the net and tee instructions for placement and supervision. A compact product photo does not tell you how much usable room the complete activity requires.

Choose a usable tee height

The adult Tanner Original adjusts from 26 to 43 inches. Measure the contact points the player intends to practice. A youth or low-ball version may be more suitable for a smaller player or a particular drill. Range matters more than the adult label.

Make the routine repeatable

Keep ball collection simple and decide what each round of swings is intended to practice. A coach’s useful cue and a consistent setup can make the session more purposeful. More equipment can also add setup time, so build around what you will use regularly.

Add measurement with a purpose

Before buying a radar unit or swing sensor, decide which measurement you need and under what conditions it is meaningful. Check compatibility, subscription requirements, and mounting instructions. A number without a consistent setup is hard to compare across sessions.

Your questions, answered.

Do I need a pitching machine first?

A tee can be a simpler first purchase for stationary contact work. A pitching machine serves a different drill and needs its own space and supervision plan.
